What changes a registration's status, and what each state means

• As long as the relationship behind it holds. A letter from a clinician who still treats you can be confirmed by the phone call a careful leasing office makes, whatever its date.
• Until the housing provider asks for something current. Usually at a new lease, a renewal, a change of ownership, or a move.
• Not past a lapsed license. If the clinician's license has expired or was never valid in your state, the date on the letter is the least of its problems.
• Not automatically across state lines. Move, and the sensible step is a fresh letter from someone licensed where you now live.

Emotional support animal letter renewal, in five steps that do not waste money

1. Check what you already have. Find three things on the existing letter: the date, the clinician's license number, and the license state. If all three are current and that provider still treats you, you may need nothing at all.
2. Ask the housing provider what they want, in writing, before paying anyone. Some accept a letter of any age, some want one issued within the past year, and one email often ends the whole question.
3. Go back to your own clinician first. A provider who already treats you can usually reissue or re-date a letter as part of your care, frequently at no extra charge. It is the cheapest renewal in this industry and the one nobody advertises.
4. Only then pay for a new evaluation. With no current provider, legitimate telehealth services using clinicians licensed in your state typically charge $139–$199. A renewal priced far below that usually means no clinical service is happening, and the absence is the product.
5. Mind the state timing rules. Louisiana and Montana require a provider-client relationship of at least 30 days before a letter can be issued, California (AB 468) and Arkansas require the same for emotional support dog documentation, and Iowa requires the written finding to certify whether such a relationship exists. No federal rule sets an expiry date, and most of those state rules govern how a letter is written rather than how long it lasts. Two are exceptions: an Iowa finding expires after 12 months or the lease term, whichever is greater (Iowa Code § 216.8C(2)), and Arkansas requires an annual re-evaluation to renew emotional support dog documentation (§ 20-14-1003). Either way, the timing rules bite when you switch providers: start about a month ahead, not the week your lease is due.
