An ESA Letter Costs $0 to About $200, Depending on Who Writes It
Nothing from a clinician who already treats you, and $129 to $199 from most online services. Here is every published price side by side, what the money buys, and the extras that push it higher.

On this page
An emotional support animal letter costs nothing if a clinician who already treats you writes it, and $129 to $199 from most online services. The price pays for one thing: a licensed clinician's time to evaluate you and put their license behind the letter. Everything else on a price page, from the second animal to the yearly renewal, is an extra, and some of the cheapest offers leave out the one part a landlord checks.

Most online ESA letters cost between $129 and $199
In New Jersey and New York, ESA Card's live video evaluation with a licensed therapist is $120; elsewhere, the main telehealth services charge $129 to $199 for one housing letter. These are the prices each seller prints on its own pages, for one animal and a housing letter, before any extras.
| Seller | Housing letter | What else its price page says |
|---|---|---|
| ESA Card | $120 | A live video evaluation with a therapist licensed in your state, in New Jersey and New York; the whole $120 back if the therapist can't approve you |
| Wellness Wag | $129 | Up to 2 pets; $149 for 3 or more, $89 for a college housing letter |
| ESA Pet | $139 | $194.99 with its travel letter for a psychiatric service dog as well |
| CertaPet | $149 | Housing only; $20 more for a second call in California, Iowa, Arkansas, Montana and Louisiana |
| Pettable | $149 | $169 in Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana and Montana; shown only after its quiz and your email |
| ESA Doctors | $159 | $189 with priority support; renewal $125 a year |
| Support Pets | $167.50 | Sold with a psychiatric service dog recommendation letter |
Ours is a 15 to 30 minute video call with an independent therapist licensed in your state, who alone decides whether to write the letter. If they approve you, the signed letter follows; if they can't, you get the whole $120 back. You can book in New Jersey or book in New York.
You are paying for a clinician's time, not for the paper
A housing provider can ask for reliable documentation of a disability and of the animal's disability-related need, and the only person who can supply that is a licensed clinician who has evaluated you. That evaluation is what the money buys. Our guide to who can write an ESA letter lists every license that counts.
A live evaluation
A call or visit with a clinician licensed in the state where you live. A letter with no conversation behind it is the one that fails.
A signed letter on letterhead
The clinician's license type, number and state, the date, and a signature. The license number is what a leasing office looks up.
A clinician who answers the check
Screening services such as PetScreening contact the provider who signed. A real letter has a real clinician at the other end of that call.
A housing document
An emotional support animal letter is for housing. It does not change what an airline, a shop or a restaurant has to allow.
Four extras raise the price, and you may need none of them

- Living in a 30-day state. California and Arkansas require a 30-day relationship with the clinician before a letter for an emotional support dog, and Louisiana and Montana require it for any animal. That means a second consultation: CertaPet charges $20 more for it, and Pettable's letter is $169 there instead of $149. Our guide to how long an ESA letter takes covers the wait.
- A psychiatric service dog letter. $199 at CertaPet and at ESA Doctors. It is a different document for a dog trained to perform tasks; our guide to psychiatric service dogs and emotional support animals explains which one you have.
- A second animal. CertaPet charges $99.99 for a second ESA letter; Wellness Wag covers up to 2 pets for $129 and 3 or more for $149. Each animal needs its own reason, as our guide to how many ESAs you can have explains.
- Renewing every year. $99.99 a year at CertaPet and $125 at ESA Doctors. More on that below.

Registration and certification kits sell from nothing to about $150, and no U.S. law requires or recognizes any of them: a registry is a database, not a clinician. A kit can be a handy thing to carry, but it never stands in for the letter. Our guide to ESA registration and the ESA letter sets the two side by side, and the certification cost guide prices every kit on the market.
The cheap letter to avoid is the one with no live evaluation behind it. Screening services call the clinician who signed, and a letter nobody will stand behind fails that call. Florida goes further: fraudulent emotional support animal documentation is a misdemeanor there. Our guide to whether free ESA letters are real covers the offers that sound too good, and the free ESA letter checker shows what a letter you already hold is missing.
No ESA letter changes what you pay to fly with a pet
Since the Department of Transportation's rule took effect in January 2021, U.S. airlines carry emotional support animals as pets, with the airline's pet fee. A letter bought for travel saves nothing at the gate, so pay only for the housing letter you need. A trained psychiatric service dog is a different case, with its own rules.
Renewing a letter often costs close to the first one
A letter carries the date it was written, and a landlord may ask for a current one at a new lease or a move. Iowa goes further: the letter must state when it expires. Online services charge again for that, $99.99 a year at CertaPet and $125 at ESA Doctors, while a clinician who still treats you can usually write a fresh one at a normal session. Our ESA letter renewal guide explains when you actually need one.

In short: ask a clinician who already treats you first, expect $129 to $199 online for one housing letter, pay for extras only when they apply to you, and skip any letter that comes without a live evaluation. Our guide to getting an ESA letter without a therapist compares the routes in full.
